Eduardo Souto De Moura

This series explores the crematorium building designed by Eduardo Souto De Moura in Kortrijk, Belgium. Despite feeling like a distinctly internal space, the architect has established strong links with the outside world and the transitional spaces where the two meet one another. Light plays an important role in this: it enters through defined openings into the space. Additionally natural materials such as wood or stone are used and contrast one another, whilst long perspectives dominate the corridors and transitional spaces taking the viewer to places that can’t be seen. The space is unique and invites the visitor to reflect on life and death.

»The silence between my two breathes: one ends so the next can start. A moment of transition, a space between life and death and a marker of the continuity between them.«
